Proper freight agent training is one of the most important gifts you can give yourself if you are considering a career as a freight agent or broker. There are no quick fix ways to get the education and develop the skills you need in order to do the job well. That being said there are things you can do in order to make sure that you have the knowledge foundation upon which to build your skills. There are very few things in life that you can just pick up and do; freight brokering is not one of those things.
You cannot learn all the rules and regulations in a few hours. You also will have great difficulty learning these things from someone who has little or no practical experience. You need someone that is out there actually doing the job to teach you how to do the job. You need someone who has relevant experience to tell you how to handle certain situations. You do not need to read all about it and hope you get the answers right when the proper time comes. You need to be confident in your knowledge, your skills, and your ability. That is something you cannot receive from spending a few hours reading all about it.
What Options Exist for Broker Training Education?
There are things you can do in order to maximize your education and training. First of all, take a job in the field. There is no substitute for hands on training and even if the job isn't specifically a brokerage job there are plenty of things you can do (that allow you the luxury of on the job training) that will help you develop instincts and connections for your future brokerage business.
Looking for a freight broker and other resources?
You also have the option of taking classes. As long as your classes offer a little more than a "read the handbook" approach to freight agent training you should find that after a lengthy period of study you are ready to move on to the next level of study. Proper study should definitely take more than a few hours and it should offer continued support to its graduates.
Proper training will include the opportunity to work with the software and/or equipment you will be using as an actual broker. This is essential as you will need to understand certain standards for doing things. Transactions need to be made in a specific way and you need to be aware of that before you ever consider brokering a load. Working with the equipment you will be using as part of the actual job is a great way to insure that you know where all the dots and crosses belong.
Your mind is the most important tool by far when it comes to your training to be a freight broker. Whether you take a few days or a few weeks to sift through even the basic information you need to understand in order to get through freight agent training you will be on your way to a better career and life in no time.
