When you are considering career options you may come across some interesting sounding careers, such as that of a freight broker, and wonder exactly what these careers are and what it takes to pursue these careers. A broker in general is someone who sells something they do not own. This term is commonly used in real estate and the stock market but also works well for those who handle matching companies who need freight delivered with companies who have the means to deliver the freight.
While perhaps not as glamorous as other brokers the responsibility of a brokerage firm for freight is immense and as such this is a job that is well suited for those that are serious minded and dedicated. The broker never actually takes possession of the freight that is being moved. This is the major distinction between someone who bears the title of freight forwarder and a broker. There are other differences, but this is the one that is most easily discernable to the general population.
Educational Preparation
There are a few ways in which those who are considering this particular career path can obtain proper education. This is an important job to those companies on both sides of the equation that hire the services of a broker for freight transactions. Poorly or ineffectively handled transactions can cost not only valuable time but expenses that add up very quickly. For this reason alone, education of some sort is necessary in order to hold this critical position. There are generally three types of education that prepare people for a position as a freight broker: traditional educational settings, training on the job (many people in this line of work worked their way up from other positions of increasing responsibility), and online courses that offer specialized training and job placement services upon completion.
Looking for a freight broker class and other resources?
The type of training that will be best for you depends primarily on how you learn best. Some learn best by doing, though the career path approach may take the longest time and you may never work up to the brokerage position you seek. Classes offered by brokerages are designed to weed out more often than to educate. Online programs allow you to direct the course of your studies to some degree but require you to be extremely disciplined in your approach to learning. Each one has benefits and concessions depending on the student involved.
The ultimate goal in this though is a career that is fairly stable, in demand, and quite lucrative when you have the right connections. The pace is fast and there are many demands on your time when you approach this particular line of work. The financial rewards often provide incentive enough to quickly justify occasional upsets and intrusions into your personal life that may occur along the way. Many people find that this is an interesting and rewarding line of work. If you are considering seeking a position as a freight broker you just might find yourself in for the ride of your life.
